The book is about a Chinese man named Ah Song who decides to leave his native land and travel to America, which he views as a land of freedom and equality. In the first letter, he expresses his longing to go to America and observes how the country has welcomed immigrants from various nationalities and provided them with bread, work, and liberty. He believes that the people who have been rescued by America from oppression and starvation are the most eager to welcome new immigrants.
In the second letter, Ah Song is already at sea, on his way to America. He mentions that he has been hired by a kind American who is willing to pay him $12 a month, which is a significant wage compared to what he would earn in China. He also mentions that he had to turn over his wife, son, and two daughters as security for the payment of his ship fare, but he is confident that they are not in any danger because he knows he will be faithful to his employer.
