"Noble creation from the author of bestsellers such as "Snow Crash," "The Diamond Age," "Cryptonomicon," and the Baroque Cycle trilogy - a grandiose story that immerses the reader into a whimsically inverted, yet still recognizable world. Winner of the Locus, Portal, and Mir Fantasy Magazine Year-End awards. Nominated for the Hugo, Arthur C. Clarke, John W. Campbell Memorial Award, British Science Fiction Association Award, and Endeavor Award.
Erasmus Fraa - a young monastic scholar living in the concent (formerly known as a mathic entity) of St. Edhar, a safe haven for mathematicians and philosophers. This monastery shields scholars from the detrimental influence of the secular world with ancient stone walls, complex rituals, and traditions.
Throughout the centuries, cities and states rose and fell outside the concent walls. Thrice, in the darkest epochs of history, violence born of superstition and ignorance invaded and desolated the enclosed society of mathematical science. However, the scholar-monks managed to adapt after catastrophes, becoming more ascetic and less dependent on technology and materialistic ideologies. Erasmus, however, is unafraid of the external world, as these tragic events have become ancient history.
Once a decade, the Apert Day ritual occurs, during which the concent gates swing open wide to allow curious laypeople, extramuros, inside and release the scholar-monks into the world. In his first Apert, Erasmus eagerly anticipates reuniting with his loved ones whom he has not seen since joining the concent. Yet, within a week, both his former life and the one he embraced teeter on the brink of dangerous change.
Powerful forces threaten the peaceful and stable life of the scholar-monks. Only a fragile alliance between the avout and the extramuros can resist them. Erasmus finds himself unwittingly bearing the responsibility for the fate of the world, becoming a central figure in a drama that will determine the future of all existence, embarking on an extraordinary journey that will lead him to the most perilous and inhospitable corners of an unfamiliar planet... and far beyond its limits.
"Reading this novel is a stunning experience." - Washington Post
"An extensive exploration that will delight all those who love complex alternative worlds and understand irony."
