The book tells the story of Mikhail Aleksandrovich Reznikov, a 25-year-old researcher who is sent on a trip to South Asia. He is not prepared for the horrors and brutality of war that he encounters in Afghanistan. The landscape is a dull wasteland, and the region has changed drastically due to years of conflict. The journey to his destination, a secret facility called "1-03", is dangerous and he is accompanied by heavily armed KGB officers. Along the way, he witnesses destroyed buildings, burned cars, and decomposing corpses. However, the sights he encounters on the way cannot be compared to what he sees within the walls of the secret facility.
