At present, there is a high level of tension in the global cybersecurity landscape. Previously, cyber threats were predominantly associated with the theft of sensitive data and blackmail. However, governments are now increasingly concerned about the concept of cyber weapons and the potential for causing physical harm to critical infrastructure. This threat can materialize through targeted attacks on industrial control systems (ICS), which serve as a crucial link between information technology and real-world industrial processes. Historically, these systems have been inadequately safeguarded, or in some cases, completely unprotected, thus leaving entire industries susceptible to cyber risks. In this context, this article explores practical considerations regarding the protection of ICS and specifically addresses the challenges associated with building resilient and secure ICS architectures.
