Edgar Degas
Edgar Degas was a key figure in the impressionist's circle, closely associated with Renoir and known for his depictions of Parisian life. He began his artistic journey in the studio of Louis-Ernest Barrias in 1853 and later studied under Louis Lamothe, who shared his admiration for Ingres. Influenced by the Old Masters, Degas frequently visited Italy to study and sketch. By the 1860s and 1870s, he became known for his paintings of racecourses and jockeys, showcasing his remarkable ability to capture the movement and beauty of horses. However, it was in the 1860s that Degas discovered his passion for ballet, leading to a shift in focus towards the theatre and dance. His intricate compositions, such as "The Dancing Anteroom at the Opera on Rue Le Peletier," demonstrate his attention to detail and careful observation of movement. Degas's exploration of ballet led him to the rehearsal halls, where he captured the essence of everyday life with unparalleled skill.
